Art for a New Understanding Collateral

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Contemporary Indigenous art comes front and center in Art for a New Understanding: Native Voices, 1950s to Now—a free exhibition organized by Crystal Bridges. Discover new stories as today’s Indigenous artists fill the gallery with exquisite colors, images of community and joy, and thought-provoking moments of reflection.

DESIGN GOALS
Art for a New Understanding
was an internally curated exhibition. It was a priority to set aside stereotypes and create an experience that was contemporary. I developed a type treatment that could fit a variety of formats and used a contemporary font with an inline style, paired with a traditional serif font.

The largest place the type treatment was displayed was the exhibition entrance. The font styles were complimented by a tri-color gradient that corresponded to sections in the show. The gradient was used throughout the show to visualize the complicated and unfinished history of Indigenous peoples.

Above is a full page ad and the front & back of the promotional rack card. The marketing campaign centered on results from our image testing.

The marketing material and the gallery experience centered the artist’s voices. This was a promotional slide shown during events at the museum.

We developed an all-ages guide that acted as a conversation, with section headlines that were a gentle inroad to a difficult discussion. Below is a full design file of the guide.
